Building His Way

One of the most important goals of CMCA is to further the Great Commission by building an association of collaborating correctional ministries.  Considering the vast and diverse dynamics surrounding correctional ministries, the number of members in such an association could be incredible.  Unifying such an army of believers is certainly pleasing to God and those we serve.

However, numbers of people alone are not significant unless they actively support or serve the group’s mission.  I often remember how God strategically assigned specific duties to His armies of the Old Testament.  Many biblical illustrations describe such plans of God and a few of which can be found in the stories of Gideon, Jericho, and even the establishment of Israel’s twelve tribes.  CMCA can use this same model as it moves forward.  Continue reading

God Works in Mysterious Ways

Most generally, a person would not be happy experiencing hospital stays and medical conditions that could be considered life threatening. However, when such experiences increase faith and enhance personal relationships with Christ, these situations are well worth the struggles.

I recently returned from a 3 week mission’s trip to Uganda. I had been there before with excellent memories of God’s life changing power moving in people’s lives. However, this time I did not feel a peace about going. No matter how hard I tried to find peace, I did not receive it. I felt within myself that there were going to be serious problems. So much so, that I told Neda (my wife) and my immediate family to pray that I make it back. She questioned whether I should go. I told her that I felt compelled (by the Holy Spirit) to go, but I had serious concerns about some sort of danger. Even Dr. Manuel Cordero, the team leader, was hesitant about something. I questioned whether I was hearing God or my own unknown fears. But, I continued with the direction I felt He was leading.   Continue reading

AZ charges $25 to visit prisoners

I recently read an article about Arizona charging $25 per person to visit prisoners as a one-time background check fee.  I was stunned by the idea of imposing a special tax on families of inmates as well as by the amount of support some people gave to this action.  There are many reasons why this is a bad practice but one of the things that concerns me is that most likely there are many people in our churches who are supportive of this type of punishment.  Is this really the response we should have as Christians to support punishing the families and children of offenders?  Wouldn’t it be better to encourage the families and make it as easy as possible for them to visit since having strong family support reduces recidivism?  I believe we need to educate our fellow believers so they are not influenced by a culture of punishment.

A Lamp unto Our Feet

I am often reminded of boyhood memories that put biblical truths in perspective. One memory that helps bring balance into my life and often repeats itself is walking with a lamp. We read in Psalms 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”  While camping as a boy scout, I navigated many difficult paths while carrying a lamp.  Walking at night required trusting in paths and having a light to negotiate those paths. So it is in our spiritual lives; we trust in the paths God has laid before us and He truly is the lamp unto our feet. Continue reading
